“SS18” at Sawtooth ARI addresses credentialism* and problematises relationships that exists between multiple unilateral environments. It explores ‘screen-based’ daily realities, and how contemporary audiences engage with and access content.
The heightened accessibility and applied credentialism caused by experiencing art via a website or Instagram has affected the way in which art is critiqued, as well as produced. The exhibition questions the value of ‘documentation experiences’ of artworks/exhibitions and how audiences influence the industry and ideas of status and quality.
*The term credentialism refers to the context that an artist's practice is linked to (ie. gallery, publication, collector, writer, curator), and the associated ‘tick’ of quality provided by that context.
